About autism spectrum disorder interventions for older children and teenagers. Many types of interventions for younger children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD. Autism interventions: older kids & teens. Many children get a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) later in childhood. If this happens with your child, it’s never too late to try an intervention. And there are lots of interventions that can help older children and teenagers. About autism spectrum disorder interventions for older children and teenagers Many types of interventions for younger children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can also help older children and teenagers. There are also programs that have been developed specifically for older children and teenagers with ASD. These should take into account the common mismatch between an older child’s cognitive or developmental age and her age in years. For example, your child might be 1. These therapies and interventions should also help your child with the skills and understanding he needs to: Below we list some types of interventions you might want to think about for your older child with ASD. You’ll want to make sure that the time, energy and money you invest in interventions are worth it. Two key questions can help you choose worthwhile interventions: is the intervention supported by reliable evidence? Will it be a good fit for your family? Social skills training. Social skills training can include teaching children and teenagers to read non- verbal cues like eye contact, body language, tone of voice and facial expression. It often includes skills like seeing things from other people’s perspectives, solving social problems and understanding social and emotional rules. Your child might be able to do some social skills training one on one with a therapist or teacher, or as part of a group. Some programs include outings so your child can try out her new skills in the community. This helps her apply the skills she’s learned in one setting to other settings, situations and people. Some social skills programs are designed by a therapist or a teacher for a specific child or group of children. Others might be run by someone who is trained to use a particular program, like the Secret Agent Society program, Emotion- based Social Skills Training, the Social Thinking Program or Stop Think Do. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is based on the idea that how we think, how we feel and how we act are all related. ![]() That is, the way we think about something shapes our feelings and our behaviour. For example, negative or unrealistic thoughts can cause us to feel bad, which in turn affects how we behave, and the choices we make. For example, if your child thinks, ‘Nobody likes me and I’m never going to have any friends’, he’s likely to feel sad and lonely, and his actions will reflect this. He might hang out by himself or close himself off to opportunities to mix with other children. CBT could teach your child to replace this negative thinking with something more positive and realistic.
This could be, ‘It’s hard to make friends but I’m a good person and I’m going to keep trying’. This will help your child feel better about herself, so she’s more likely to try to socialise with her peers. CBT programs also often teach relaxation strategies that your child can use to reduce and manage anxiety associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). CBT is a ‘talking therapy’, which means your child needs an adequate understanding of language to use it. Cartooning strategies. Cartooning or comic strip strategies use visual symbols to help children and teenagers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) understand social situations. By drawing cartoons, children can turn abstract or confusing events into pictures that they can understand and think about with an adult’s help. For example, your child is sent to the principal’s office after a playground conflict. With an adult’s help, your child could draw the situation as a cartoon, using speech bubbles. An adult could then talk about what happened with your child and help him understand the thoughts and feelings of the other people involved. Modelling. Modelling involves an adult or peer showing your child how to do something or how to behave, which your child then copies. Modelling can be useful for teaching many skills – for example, social skills like smiling and saying hello, skills for self- care and hygiene, and educational tasks. Video- modelling is another option. There are some ready- made videos that show people modelling different skills, but you could also make your own. For example, you could record yourself or someone else joining in conversations, inviting a peer to play, using body language or using different tones of voice. Peer training. Interventions that use peer training teach typically developing children – for example, siblings or classmates – strategies for playing and interacting with children who have trouble with social skills. This means that when your child plays and socialises with the typically developing children, your child has more and better opportunities to develop social skills. For example, classmates might be taught to appreciate how everybody is different, how to start an interaction with a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and how to keep that interaction going. Self- management techniques. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can develop independence by learning to regulate their own behaviour. One way for them to do this is by recording how often a particular behaviour happens using tick sheets, stickers or a wrist counter. For example, your child’s goal might be to stay sitting down until she has finished eating. Each time your child achieves this goal, she puts a sticker in her book. Stepping Stones Triple PStepping Stones Triple P is a parenting program that has been modified for parents of children, up to 1. It can help you: manage challenging behaviour and developmental issuesencourage behaviour you likedevelop a close relationship with your childteach your child new skills. In this short video, parents talk about interventions for teenagers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A person’s ASD can change over time, and different interventions can become more useful. For example, therapies focused on social skills are often relevant in the teenage years. Also, parents can sometimes do training to help them pass on skills to their teenage children in daily life. Kehle (Eds.), The Oxford handbook of school psychology (pp. New York, NY: Oxford University Press. Cough - Wikipedia. A cough is a sudden and often repetitively occurring, protective reflex, which helps to clear the large breathing passages from fluids, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. The cough reflex consists of three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed glottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs following opening of the glottis, usually accompanied by a distinctive sound.[1] Coughing is either voluntary or involuntary. Frequent coughing usually indicates the presence of a disease. Many viruses and bacteria benefit, from an evolutionary perspective, by causing the host to cough, which helps to spread the disease to new hosts. Most of the time, irregular coughing is caused by a respiratory tract infection but can also be triggered by choking, smoking, air pollution,[1]asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, post- nasal drip, chronic bronchitis, lung tumors, heart failure and medications such as ACE inhibitors. ![]() Treatment should target the cause; for example, smoking cessation or discontinuing ACE inhibitors. Cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan are frequently prescribed, but have been demonstrated to have little effect. Other treatment options may target airway inflammation or may promote mucus expectoration. As it is a natural protective reflex, suppressing the cough reflex might have damaging effects, especially if the cough is productive.[2]Classification[edit]A cough can be classified by its duration, character, quality, and timing.[3] The duration can be either acute (of sudden onset) if it is present less than three weeks, subacute if it is present between three or eight weeks, and chronic when lasting longer than eight weeks.[3] A cough can be non- productive (dry) or productive (when sputum is coughed up). It may occur only at night (then called nocturnal cough), during both night and day, or just during the day.[3]A number of characteristic coughs exist. Learn about coughs, (acute, chronic, or persistent), which can have common causes such as infections, or chronic (persistent) cough may be caused by medication. The most common causes of a chronic cough are: postnasal drip; asthma, especially cough-variant asthma, which causes a cough as the main symptom. A persistent or chronic cough that lasts longer than a few weeks can be worrisome, but for nonsmokers, the most common causes include asthma, bronchitis, post. Coughing from time to time helps clear particles and secretions from the lungs and helps to prevent infection. However, sometimes a cough can become a chronic condition. While these have not been found to be diagnostically useful in adults, they are of use in children.[3] A barky cough is part of the common presentation of croup,[4] while a staccato cough has been classically described with chlamydiapneumonia.[5]Differential diagnosis[edit]A cough in children may be either a normal physiological reflex or due to an underlying cause.[3] In healthy children it may be normal in the absence of any disease to cough ten times a day.[3] The most common cause of an acute or subacute cough is a viral respiratory tract infection.[3] In adults with a chronic cough, i. The causes of chronic cough are similar in children with the addition of bacterial bronchitis.[3]Infections[edit]A cough can be the result of a respiratory tract infection such as the common cold, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, pertussis, or tuberculosis. ![]() October 15, 2011 Volume 84, Number 8 www.aafp.org/afp American Family Physician 887 Evaluation of the Patient with Chronic Cough JOSEPH J. Home care of a cough is often directed at treating its underlying cause. If the patient has an acute cough and have not been to a doctor, he or she may attempt to use. In the vast majority of cases, acute coughs, i. In people with a normal chest X- ray, tuberculosis is a rare finding. Pertussis is increasingly being recognised as a cause of troublesome coughing in adults. After a respiratory tract infection has cleared, the person may be left with a postinfectious cough. This typically is a dry, non- productive cough that produces no phlegm. Symptoms may include a tightness in the chest, and a tickle in the throat. This cough may often persist for weeks after an illness. The cause of the cough may be inflammation similar to that observed in repetitive stress disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome. The repetition of coughing produces inflammation which produces discomfort, which in turn produces more coughing.[7] Postinfectious cough typically does not respond to conventional cough treatments. Treatment consists of any anti- inflammatory medicine (such as ipratropium) [7] to treat the inflammation, and a cough suppressant to reduce frequency of the cough until inflammation clears.[citation needed] Inflammation may increase sensitivity to other existing issues such as allergies, and treatment of other causes of coughs (such as use of an air purifier or allergy medicines) may help speed recovery. A bronchodilator, which helps open up the airways, may also help treat this type of cough.[citation needed]Reactive airway disease[edit]When coughing is the only complaint of a person who meets the criteria for asthma (bronchial hyperresponsiveness and reversibility), this is termed cough- variant asthma. Two related conditions are atopic cough and eosinophilic bronchitis. Atopic cough occurs in individuals with a family history of atopy (an allergic condition), abundant eosinophils in the sputum, but with normal airway function and responsiveness. Eosinophilic bronchitis is also characterized by eosinophils in the sputum, without airway hyperresponsiveness or an atopic background. This condition responds to treatment with corticosteroids. Cough can also worsen in an acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Asthma is a common cause of chronic cough in adults and children. Coughing may be the only symptom the person has from their asthma, or asthma symptoms may also include wheezing, shortness of breath, and a tight feeling in their chest. Depending on how severe the asthma is, it can be treated with bronchodilators (medicine which causes the airways to open up) or inhaled steroids. Treatment of the asthma should make the cough go away. Chronic bronchitis is defined clinically as a persistent cough that produces sputum (phlegm) and mucus, for at least three months in two consecutive years. Chronic bronchitis is often the cause of "smoker's cough". The tobacco smoke causes inflammation, secretion of mucus into the airway, and difficulty clearing that mucus out of the airways. Coughing helps clear those secretions out. May be treated by quitting smoking. May also be caused by pneumoconiosis and long- term fume inhalation. Gastroesophageal reflux[edit]In people with unexplained cough, gastroesophageal reflux disease should be considered.[3] This occurs when acidic contents of the stomach come back up into the esophagus. Symptoms usually associated with GERD include heartburn, sour taste in the mouth, or a feeling of acid reflux in the chest, although, more than half of the people with cough from GERD don’t have any other symptoms. An esophageal p. H monitor can confirm the diagnosis of GERD. Sometimes GERD can complicate respiratory ailments related to cough, such as asthma or bronchitis. The treatment involves anti- acid medications and lifestyle changes with surgery indicated in cases not manageable with conservative measures. Air pollution[edit]Coughing may be caused by air pollution including tobacco smoke, particulate matter, irritant gases, and dampness in a home.[3] The human health effects of poor air quality are far reaching, but principally affect the body's respiratory system and the cardiovascular system. Individual reactions to air pollutants depend on the type of pollutant a person is exposed to, the degree of exposure, the individual's health status and genetics. People who exercise outdoors on hot, smoggy days, for example, increase their exposure to pollutants in the air. Foreign body[edit]A foreign body can sometimes be suspected, for example if the cough started suddenly when the patient was eating. Rarely, sutures left behind inside the airway branches can cause coughing. A cough can be triggered by dryness from mouth breathing or recurrent aspiration of food into the windpipe in people with swallowing difficulties. Angiotensin- converting enzyme inhibitor[edit]Angiotensin- converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are drugs used in diabetics, heart disease, and high blood pressure. In 1. 0- 2. 5%[citation needed] of the people who take it, it can cause them to have a cough as a side effect. Cessation of ACE Inhibitor use is the only way to stop the cough. Such medicines for hypertension are very common in use such as ramipril and quinapril. There are cases of "cough of unknown origin" who had resolution with stopping the drug.[8]Psychogenic cough[edit]A psychogenic cough, "habit cough" or "tic cough" may be the cause in the absence of a physical problem. In these instances, emotional and psychological problems are suspected. However, other illnesses have to be ruled out before a firm diagnosis of psychogenic cough is made. Psychogenic coughing is different from habit coughing and tic coughing.[9]Psychogenic cough is thought to be more common in children than in adults. A possible scenario: psychogenic cough develops in a child who has a chronically ill brother or sister.[9]Neurogenic cough[edit]Some cases of chronic cough may be attributed to a sensory neuropathic disorder.[1. Treatment for neurogenic cough may include the use of certain neuralgia medications. Coughing may occur in tic disorders such as Tourette syndrome, although it should be distinguished from throat- clearing in this disorder. Cough may also be caused by conditions affecting the lung tissue such as bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases and sarcoidosis. Coughing can also be triggered by benign or malignant lung tumors or mediastinal masses. Through irritation of the nerve, diseases of the external auditory canal (wax, for example) can also cause cough. Cardiovascular diseases associated with cough are heart failure, pulmonary infarction and aortic aneurysm. Nocturnal cough is associated with heart failure, as the heart does not compensate for the increased volume shift to the pulmonary circulation, in turn causing pulmonary edema and resultant cough.[1. Other causes of nocturnal cough include asthma, post- nasal drip and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).[1. Another cause of cough occurring preferentially in supine position is recurrent aspiration.[1. Given its irritant nature to mammal tissues, capsaicin is widely used to determine the cough threshold and as a tussive stimulant in clinical research of cough suppressants. Capsaicin is what makes chili peppers spicy, and might explain why workers in factories with these vegetables can develop a cough. Chronic cough in adults. OVERVIEWCoughing from time to time helps clear particles and secretions from the lungs and helps to prevent infection. However, sometimes a cough can become a chronic condition. A chronic cough is usually defined as a cough that lasts for eight weeks or longer. Although coughing is not usually a sign of a serious problem, it can be annoying. Coughing frequently is embarrassing, can make you physically tired, make it hard to sleep, and cause you to be dizzy, hoarse, strain muscles, sweat, and leak urine (especially in women). This article discusses the possible causes and treatments of chronic cough in adults. Coughing that began less than eight weeks ago is discussed separately. See "Patient education: Acute bronchitis in adults (Beyond the Basics)".) More detailed information about chronic cough is available by subscription. See "Evaluation of subacute and chronic cough in adults" and "Treatment of subacute and chronic cough in adults".)CAUSES OF CHRONIC COUGHThe most common causes of chronic cough are postnasal drip, asthma, and acid reflux from the stomach. These three causes are responsible for up to 9. Less common causes include infections, medications, and lung diseases. Postnasal drip — Postnasal drip occurs when secretions from the nose drip or flow into the back of the throat from the nose. These secretions can irritate the throat and trigger a cough. Postnasal drip can develop in people with allergies, colds, rhinitis, and sinusitis. Signs of postnasal drip include a stuffy or runny nose, a sensation of liquid in the back of the throat, and a feeling you need to clear your throat frequently. However, some people have so- called "silent" postnasal drip, which causes no symptoms other than a cough. Asthma — Asthma is the second most frequent cause of chronic cough in adults, and is the leading cause in children. In addition to coughing, you may also wheeze or feel short of breath. However, some people have a condition known as cough variant asthma, in which cough is the only symptom of asthma. See "Patient education: Asthma treatment in adolescents and adults (Beyond the Basics)".)Asthma- related cough may be seasonal, may follow an upper respiratory infection, or may get worse with exposure to cold, dry air, or certain fumes or fragrances. Acid reflux — Gastroesophageal reflux, also known as acid reflux, occurs when acid from the stomach flows back (refluxes) into the esophagus, the tube connecting the stomach and the throat. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refers to symptoms caused by acid reflux. Many people with cough due to acid reflux have heartburn or a sour taste in the mouth. However, some patients with GERD have cough as their only symptom. See "Patient education: Acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease) in adults (Beyond the Basics)".)Other causes — A number of other conditions can lead to chronic cough. These include: Respiratory tract infection — An upper respiratory infection such as a cold can cause a cough that lasts more than eight weeks. This may be due to postnasal drip (as described above), or to irritability in the airways that developed as a result of the infection. Many people with a chronic cough after a respiratory infection respond to treatment for postnasal drip or cough variant asthma. See 'Postnasal drip' above.)Sometimes bacterial tracheobronchitis or bacterial sinusitis can develop following a viral upper respiratory tract infection. In almost all cases of bacterial tracheobronchitis, patients will have a cough that produces sputum. The sputum is colored from light yellow to dark green or even brown. Likewise, in almost all cases of cough from bacterial sinusitis, patients will have sinus congestion and the nasal secretions that drip or flow into the back of the throat are similarly off- colored. If such colored sputum or postnasal drip continues unimproved for more than 1. See "Patient education: Acute bronchitis in adults (Beyond the Basics)" and "Patient education: Acute sinusitis (sinus infection) (Beyond the Basics)".)Use of ACE inhibitors — Medications known as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, which are commonly used to treat high blood pressure, cause a chronic cough in up to 2. The cough is usually dry and hacking. Switching to another medication often improves the cough over the course of one to two weeks. Chronic bronchitis — Chronic bronchitis is a condition in which the airways are irritated, causing you to cough, sometimes raising phlegm. Most people with chronic bronchitis are current or past smokers. See "Patient education: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema (Beyond the Basics)".)Lung cancer — Although lung cancer can cause coughing, very few people with a chronic cough have lung cancer. Cancer is possible, however, especially if you are a smoker and your cough changes suddenly, you begin to cough up blood, or if you continue to cough more than one month after quitting smoking. See "Patient education: Lung cancer risks, symptoms, and diagnosis (Beyond the Basics)".)Eosinophilic bronchitis — A special type of inflammation in the airways called eosinophilic bronchitis can cause a chronic cough. This is diagnosed when your breathing tests show no evidence of asthma, but your phlegm or airway biopsy shows cells called eosinophils. Eosinophilic bronchitis is much less common than asthma. CHRONIC COUGH DIAGNOSISTo investigate the cause of a chronic cough, your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and perform a physical examination. Based upon your symptoms and examination, your clinician may recommend a trial of treatment before other testing is performed. If you improve with treatment, no further testing is generally needed. If you do NOT improve, or if your diagnosis is not clear, further testing may be recommended, such as: Lung imaging — If you are a current or former cigarette smoker, or if you have other medical conditions that can affect the lung, a chest X- ray or even a chest CT scan may be done. Lung function tests — If asthma is suspected but cannot be confirmed, the clinician may perform lung function tests that measure the pattern of air flow into and out of the lungs. Acid reflux testing — To confirm a diagnosis of acid reflux, a test may be done to measure the acid level of fluid in the esophagus. This test is called a p. H probe. In some people, a test called upper endoscopy will be done to look for irritation of the esophagus and to obtain a biopsy of the esophagus. See "Patient education: Upper endoscopy (Beyond the Basics)" and "Patient education: Acid reflux (gastroesophageal reflux disease) in adults (Beyond the Basics)".)CHRONIC COUGH TREATMENTTreatment of chronic cough aims to eliminate the underlying cause. Most of the time, each type of treatment is tried separately, one after another, instead of all at the same time. Seeing which one works best helps to figure out the underlying cause. On the other hand, a number of patients have more than one cause for their chronic cough. In such cases cough only resolves when all causes are successfully treated at the same time. Thus, if your clinician believes there is more than one cause of your cough, or if your cough is particularly disabling, treatment or evaluation of the likely causes may be pursued simultaneously. Once your cough has resolved, treatments can be stopped one at a time, starting with the treatment least likely to have been helpful, observing you for any return of cough. Here are some examples of treatment choices for different causes of cough. Postnasal drip — A cough related to postnasal drip may improve with the use of a decongestant, nasal or oral antihistamine, nasal glucocorticoid, or a nasal spray that contains ipratropium. The best treatment (or combination of treatments) depends upon your symptoms and medical history. The following are some examples of how these medications may be used: If you have postnasal drip from a cold — Antihistamines that are taken as a pill, such as chlorpheniramine (brand name: Chlor- Trimeton) or clemastine (Tavist, Dayhist), may help, but can cause side effects such as drowsiness and drying of the eyes, nose, and mouth. Most of these are available over the counter. Decongestants such as pseudoephedrine can improve nasal congestion, make it easier to blow one’s nose, and thus lessen post nasal drip. Most drugstores in the United States carry pseudoephedrine behind the counter, so you must request it from the pharmacist (a prescription is not required). The nasal spray ipratropium bromide (Atrovent, available without a prescription) can also help relieve runny nose, postnasal drip, and sneezing associated with a cold. If you have postnasal drip from allergies (“hay fever”) — Nasal glucocorticoids can be used to help reduce nasal inflammation, postnasal drip, and cough. Some are available over- the- counter in the United States (sample brand names: Flonase Allergy Relief, Rhinocort Allergy), while others require a prescription. Oral antihistamines such as loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra), or cetirizine (Zyrtec), are also effective for allergic postnasal drip and they are available without a prescription. They are less likely to cause sleepiness than older generation antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine or diphenhydramine. Nasal antihistamine sprays such as azelastine (Astelin) can also relieve postnasal drip. These forms of treatment (nasal glucocorticoids and oral or nasal antihistamines) can be tried alone, or they can be used in combination if needed. Cough variant asthma — If your cough is due to asthma, you will be given the standard treatment for asthma, which includes an inhaled glucocorticoid such as fluticasone (Flovent), budesonide (Pulmicort), or beclomethasone (QVAR). You may also be prescribed an inhaled bronchodilator such as albuterol (Pro. Air, Ventolin, or Proventil) if you have wheezing or shortness of breath. Schematic diagram of the human ear. Hearing, or auditory perception, is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations,[1] changes in the pressure of the surrounding medium through time, through an organ such as the ear. Background[edit]Sound may be heard through solid, liquid, or gaseous matter.[2] It is one of the traditional five senses; partial or total inability to hear is called hearing loss. In humans and other vertebrates, hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system: mechanical waves, known as vibrations are detected by the ear and transduced into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain (primarily in the temporal lobe). Like touch, audition requires sensitivity to the movement of molecules in the world outside the organism. Both hearing and touch are types of mechanosensation.[3][4]Hearing mechanism[edit]There are three main components of the human ear: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. 25 mcg (1,000 IU) is more than you can get from fortified foods or multivitamins; amounts that high are only available through vitamin D2-only supplements. The skeleton (from Greek σκελετός, skeletós "dried up") is the body part that forms the supporting structure of an organism. There are several different. Continued What Are the Treatments for Acid Reflux in Infants and Children? There are a variety of lifestyle measures you can try for acid reflux in babies and older. Have you ever wondered how much of your body is water? The percentage of water depends on age and gender. Here's how much water is inside you. Outer ear[edit]The outer ear includes the pinna, the visible part of the ear, as well as the ear canal which terminates at the eardrum, also called the tympanic membrane. The pinna serves to focus sound waves through the ear canal toward the eardrum. Because of the asymmetrical character of the outer ear of most mammals, sound is filtered differently on its way into the ear depending on what vertical location it is coming from. This gives these animals the ability to localize sound vertically. The eardrum is an airtight membrane, and when sound waves arrive there, they cause it to vibrate following the waveform of the sound. Middle ear[edit]The middle ear consists of a small air- filled chamber that is located medial to the eardrum. Within this chamber are the three smallest bones in the body, known collectively as the ossicles which include the malleus, incus and stapes (sometimes referred to colloquially as the hammer, anvil and stirrup respectively). They aid in the transmission of the vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. The purpose of the middle ear ossicles is to overcome the impedance mismatch between air and water, by providing impedance matching. Also located in the middle ear are the stapedius and tensor tympani muscles which protect the hearing mechanism through a stiffening reflex. ![]() The stapes transmits sound waves to the inner ear through the oval window, a flexible membrane separating the air- filled middle ear from the fluid- filled inner ear. The round window, another flexible membrane, allows for the smooth displacement of the inner ear fluid caused by the entering sound waves. Inner ear[edit]The inner ear consists of the cochlea, which is a spiral- shaped, fluid- filled tube. It is divided lengthwise by the organ of Corti, which is the main organ of mechanical to neural transduction. The scientific understanding of sleep has improved, and recommendations on sleep duration are taken seriously. Learn how much sleep we need, how to get enough, and. The podcast craze of the past several years shows no signs of slowing down, and while every armchair broadcaster with a voice recorder app is eager to get in the game. Bel Marra Health experts and writers provide breaking health news online. We cover the news that will help you stay informed on the latest health breakthroughs.
Inside the organ of Corti is the basilar membrane, a structure that vibrates when waves from the middle ear propagate through the cochlear fluid – endolymph. The basilar membrane is tonotopic, so that each frequency has a characteristic place of resonance along it. Characteristic frequencies are high at the basal entrance to the cochlea, and low at the apex. Basilar membrane motion causes depolarization of the hair cells, specialized auditory receptors located within the organ of Corti.[5] While the hair cells do not produce action potentials themselves, they release neurotransmitter at synapses with the fibers of the auditory nerve, which does produce action potentials. In this way, the patterns of oscillations on the basilar membrane are converted to spatiotemporal patterns of firings which transmit information about the sound to the brainstem.[6]Neuronal[edit]The sound information from the cochlea travels via the auditory nerve to the cochlear nucleus in the brainstem. From there, the signals are projected to the inferior colliculus in the midbraintectum. The inferior colliculus integrates auditory input with limited input from other parts of the brain and is involved in subconscious reflexes such as the auditory startle response. The inferior colliculus in turn projects to the medial geniculate nucleus, a part of the thalamus where sound information is relayed to the primary auditory cortex in the temporal lobe. Sound is believed to first become consciously experienced at the primary auditory cortex. Around the primary auditory cortex lies Wernickes area, a cortical area involved in interpreting sounds that is necessary to understand spoken words. Disturbances (such as stroke or trauma) at any of these levels can cause hearing problems, especially if the disturbance is bilateral. In some instances it can also lead to auditory hallucinations or more complex difficulties in perceiving sound. Hearing tests[edit]Hearing can be measured by behavioral tests using an audiometer. Electrophysiological tests of hearing can provide accurate measurements of hearing thresholds even in unconscious subjects. Such tests include auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABR), otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and electrocochleography (ECoch. G). Technical advances in these tests have allowed hearing screening for infants to become widespread. Defense mechanism[edit]The hearing structures of many species have defense mechanisms against injury. For example, the muscles of the middle ear (e. Hearing loss[edit]There are several different types of hearing loss: Conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss and mixed types. Conductive hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss. Mixed hearing loss. There are defined degrees of hearing loss: [7][8]Mild hearing loss - People with mild hearing loss have difficulties keeping up with conversations, especially in noisy surroundings. The most quiet sounds that people with mild hearing loss can hear with their better ear are between 2. B HL. Moderate hearing loss - People with moderate hearing loss have difficulty keeping up with conversations when they are not using a hearing aid. On average, the most quiet sounds heard by people with moderate hearing loss with their better ear are between 4. B HL. Severe hearing loss - People with severe hearing loss depend on powerful hearing aid. However, they often rely on lip- reading even when they are using hearing aids. The most quiet sounds heard by people with severe hearing loss with their better ear are between 7. B HL. Profound hearing loss - People with profound hearing loss are very hard of hearing and they mostly rely on lip- reading and sign language. The most quiet sounds heard by people with profound hearing loss with their better ear are from 9. B HL or more. Heredity. Congenital conditions. Presbycusis. Acquired. Noise- induced hearing loss. Ototoxic drugs and chemicals. Infection. Prevention[edit]Hearing protection is the use of devices designed to prevent Noise- Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL), a type of post- lingual hearing impairment. The various means used to prevent hearing loss generally focus on reducing the levels of noise to which people are exposed. One way this is done is through environmental modifications such as acoustic quieting, which may be achieved with as basic a measure as lining a room with curtains, or as complex a measure as employing an anechoic chamber, which absorbs nearly all sound. Another means is the use of devices such as earplugs, which are inserted into the ear canal to block noise, or earmuffs, objects designed to cover a person's ears entirely. Management[edit]Hearing aids are electronic devices that enable a person with hearing loss to receive sounds at certain amplitudes. This technological development has led to the benefit of improving the sense of hearing of a person, but the usage of these devices is significantly low. Psychologically, the first time that a person realizes that he/she needs help from a professional such as an audiologist is when they feel that their hearing is severely poor. Initially, people don't like to believe that they are becoming deaf; hence it negatively affects their approach towards the use of hearing aids. Familiarity with the devices and consultation with professionals do help people feel good about using the hearing aids.[9]Hearing underwater[edit]Hearing threshold and the ability to localize sound sources are reduced underwater, in which the speed of sound is faster than in air. Underwater hearing is by bone conduction, and localization of sound appears to depend on differences in amplitude detected by bone conduction.[1. Aquatic animals such as fish, however, have a more specialized hearing apparatus that is effective underwater.[1. In vertebrates[edit]. A cat can hear high- frequency sounds up to two octaves higher than a human. Not all sounds are normally audible to all animals. Each species has a range of normal hearing for both amplitude and frequency. Many animals use sound to communicate with each other, and hearing in these species is particularly important for survival and reproduction. In species that use sound as a primary means of communication, hearing is typically most acute for the range of pitches produced in calls and speech. Frequency range[edit]Frequencies capable of being heard by humans are called audio or sonic. The range is typically considered to be between 2. Hz and 2. 0,0. 00 Hz.[1. Frequencies higher than audio are referred to as ultrasonic, while frequencies below audio are referred to as infrasonic. Some bats use ultrasound for echolocation while in flight. Dogs are able to hear ultrasound, which is the principle of 'silent' dog whistles. Snakes sense infrasound through their jaws, and baleen whales, giraffes, dolphins and elephants use it for communication. Some fish have the ability to hear more sensitively due to a well- developed, bony connection between the ear and their swim bladder. The "aid to the deaf" of fishes appears in some species such as carp and herring.[1. In invertebrates[edit]Vertebrates aren't the only group of animals that have hearing. Some insects have hearing organs as well (e. Praying Mantises Are More Badass Than We Realized. Praying mantises are among the most frightening insects on the planet, equipped with powerful front legs which they use to snatch unwary insects, spiders, and even the odd amphibian or reptile. But as new research reveals, praying mantises are also proficient at capturing birds—which they do more often than we thought. New research published in The Wilson Journal of Ornithology shows that small birds often fall victim to praying mantises, and that this behavior exists among many different mantis species around the world. Most cases of this insect- on- bird violence were documented in North America, where small birds—particularly hummingbirds—are snatched by the predatory insects when visiting feeders or house gardens. Praying mantises have those iconic raptorial front legs which allow them to capture animals and grasp them during a meal. Their primary prey consists of bugs and spiders, but they’ve also been observed to eat small vertebrates such as frogs, lizards, salamanders, and snakes. More infrequently, praying mantises have also been seen munching on the odd bird, but it wasn’t known if these were isolated incidents, or a hunting behavior specific to a select group of praying mantises. The new study, co- authored by James Van Remsen from Louisiana State University and Martin Nyffeler from the University of Basel, now shows that this bird- eating behavior exists worldwide among praying mantises and that it’s definitely a thing that praying mantises do. The zoologists collected and documented nearly 1. Praying mantises from 1. The researchers documented this behavior in 1. Antarctica. Mantises consume a wide variety of birds, including 2. The fact that eating of birds is so widespread in praying mantises, both taxonomically as well as geographically speaking, is a spectacular discovery,” noted Nyffeler in a press release. Of the birds captured, around 7. The remaining 1. 8 percent were rescued by humans who couldn’t stand to see a bird being torn to shreds by the ravenous insect. Of the observed cases, 7. United States, where praying mantises lie in wait around hummingbird feeders or plants pollinated by hummingbirds in house gardens. And indeed, hummingbirds are a frequent victim of mantises—the Ruby- throated hummingbird in particular. This finding is troubling given that several alien species of praying mantises were deliberately released in North America a few years back as a pest control measure. These imported insects represent a new threat to hummingbirds and other small birds. This is compounded by the fact that large native mantises also prey on birds. Therefore, we suggest caution in use of large- sized mantids, particularly non- native mantids, in gardens for insect pest control,” conclude the authors in their study.[The Wilson Journal of Ornithology]. How Much of Your Body Is Water? What Percentage? Have you ever wondered how much of your body is water? The percentage of water varies according to your age and gender. Here's a look at how much water is inside you. The amount of water in the human body ranges from 5. The average adult human body is 5. The percentage of water in infants is much higher, typically around 7. Body composition varies according to gender and fitness level because fatty tissue contains less water than lean tissue. The average adult male is about 6. The average adult woman is about 5. Overweight men and women have less water, as a percent than their leaner counterparts. Babies and children have the highest percentage of water. Adult men contain the next highest level of water. Adult women contain a lower percentage of water than babies or men. Obese men and women have less water, as a percentage than lean adults. The percent of water depends on your hydration level. People feel thirsty when they have already lost around 2- 3% of their body's water. Mental performance and physical coordination start to become impaired before thirst kicks in, typically around 1% dehydration. Although liquid water is the most abundant molecule in the body, additional water is found in hydrated compounds. About 3. 0- 4. 0% of the weight of the human body is the skeleton, but when the bound water is removed, either by chemical desiccation or heat, half the weight is lost. Where Exactly Is Water in the Human Body? Most of the body's water is in the intracellular fluid (2/3 of the body's water). The other third is in the extracellular fluid (1/3 of the water). The amount of water varies, depending on the organ. Much of the water is in blood plasma (2. According to a study performed by H. H. Mitchell, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the amount of water in the human heart and brain is 7. What Is the Function of Water in the Body? Water serves multiple purposes: Water is the primary building block of cells. It acts as an insulator, regulating internal body temperature. This is partly because water has a high specific heat, plus the body uses perspiration and respiration to regulate temperature. Water is needed to metabolize proteins and carbohydrates used as food. It is the primary component of saliva, used to digest carbohydrates and aid in swallowing food. The compound lubricates joints. Water insulates the brain, spinal cord, organs, and fetus. It acts as a shock absorber. Water is used to flush waste and toxins from the body via urine. Leigh Anne Pinnock wears £1. Danmark (Fyn- epidemien) i 1. Friske smittebærere finner man blant drøvtyggere i inntil to år etter infeksjon. En oppdatert liste over smittefrie land finnes på [1] hos World Organisation for Animal Health. Under utbruddet i Storbritannia i 2. Pasienthåndboka. no. Besøkt 4. august 2. Arkivert kopi».
